Reflection

Reflecting on my experiences with UF's study abroad programs in Peru and London, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible opportunities they provided me. These programs not only expanded my academic horizons but also enriched my personal growth in ways I never imagined.

Participating in the study abroad program in Peru during the summer of 2022 was a monumental step out of my comfort zone. Arriving in Huanchaco, a small town on the Northern Coast of Peru, I was initially overwhelmed by the unfamiliar language and customs. However, as I immersed myself in the archeological field school and local culture, my apprehension turned into excitement and curiosity. The hands-on experience of excavating ancient sites and analyzing skeletal remains taught me invaluable practical skills while deepening my understanding of the rich history of the Chimu civilization. Each day felt like unraveling a new chapter in the region's past, and I cherished every moment of it.

In contrast, my time in London during the summer of 2023 was a whirlwind of exploration and discovery. Roaming through the city's historical sites, museums, and diverse neighborhoods, I was captivated by the layers of history embedded in every corner. From indulging in traditional South Asian cuisine to attending acclaimed theater productions, London offered a vibrant tapestry of cultural experiences. Additionally, venturing beyond London's borders to Oxford, Windsor, Glasgow, and Edinburgh allowed me to witness the distinct charm of each locale, particularly the lively atmosphere of Scotland during a memorable Ceilidh.

Both experiences taught me invaluable lessons about adaptability, cultural appreciation, and the interconnectedness of the past and present. Whether excavating ancient artifacts in Peru or exploring centuries-old landmarks in London, I was reminded of the enduring impact of human history on contemporary society. Moreover, interacting with locals and fellow students from diverse backgrounds fostered a sense of global citizenship and empathy that transcends geographical boundaries.

The time spent in Huanchaco left an indelible mark on me. Beyond the academic pursuits, the warmth of the town's residents and the flavors of its traditional cuisine created a sense of belonging that transcended language barriers. It was a reminder of the power of human connection and the beauty of embracing unfamiliar experiences with an open heart.

In conclusion, my study abroad experiences in Peru and London were transformative journeys that not only broadened my academic horizons but also enriched my personal growth in profound ways. From unearthing ancient civilizations to immersing myself in vibrant cultural landscapes, these programs have left an indelible imprint on my journey of self-discovery and global citizenship. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have embarked on these unforgettable adventures and look forward to continuing my exploration of the world with an open mind and heart.
